Paralympic Trings as students lift the flame

Sporty students were flaming thrilled when the Rio 2016 Paralympics GB Torch Tour visited Tring last month.

The Rio 2016 Paralympics GB Torch Tour visited Grove School on June 20, and saw 12 lucky students carry the torch in front of their classmates.

The torchbearers were nominated by their peers to take turns carrying the flaming torch in an event granted exclusively to the British Paralympic Association by the International Paralympic Committee, because of their association with Stoke Mandeville, the birthplace of the Paralympic Movement.

The visit was made evenmore unique as The Rio 2016 Paralympic Torch will not visit any other country outside Brazil.

The tour is designed to raise awareness of the Paralympic movement and the 2016 Paralympic Games, inspire young people, as well as encourage Paralympic values.

Headteacher Sharon  Sanderson said: “We feel  privileged to have received the Rio 2016 Paralympic Torch at our school. The 12 torch  bearers took on their role with great pride, cheered on by the rest of the school.

“Our year 6 students also benefitted from a talk on the history and importance of the Paralympic movement.

“The Paralympic values of courage, determination, equality and inspiration are ones with which all out children can engage.”
