Novice boxer's stand-up fight against cancer

Nova Constable, aged 40, is taking part in a ‘white collar boxing’ event for novices at Berkhamsted Sportspace on April 24, in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Nova, a web development officer for Luton Borough Council, has twice been affected by the disease in the last few months. Last year, her mum was diagnosed with breast cancer but, thankfully, has now been given the all-clear.

Her dad, however, has lung cancer, with the lump growing on the outside of the lung and attached to his spine, making treatment more difficult.

Wanting to raise money for cancer research, Nova found out about Ultra White Collar Boxing (UWCB), which runs boxing events for novices and has raised more than £3 million for Cancer Research UK.

Nova, who already attended Fight Klub, BoxFit and Boxercise classes at Sportspace, is enjoying the training.

She said: “It’s a little bit scary – especially as I’m the only girl left in Team Hemel and I have to spar with the boys. I’m absolutely loving the training though – it’s so tough.”

Nova is being sponsored by The Goat pub, and would welcome another sponsor for her vest. She added £200 to her fundraising total by collecting on Berkhamsted High Street on Saturday, and hopes to have raised £2,000 by the match.
