Not so Kitchen Impossible! Pot wash cooks up a storm on Channel 4 show

Jack Renwick, 24, who lives in Tring, works at The Valiant Trooper in Aldbury and was one of eight young people with learning difficulties who took part in TV show Kitchen Impossible, under the watchful eye of the two-star Michelin chef.

Jack, who is autistic, said: “It feels good to be doing something in life. I like to keep busy, and the restaurant was a very busy environment.

“Michel taught me a lot of new things. It was nice to have the chance to do it.”

Parents Keith and Lesley, who live in Berkhamsted, say they are ‘very proud’ of their son, who was given just 10 per cent chance of survival when he was born at 26 weeks.

Lesley said: “The programme aims to change perceptions about employing people like Jack, and giving them a chance.

“They want to work and they can work.”

Jack, whose favourite food is curry, flourished on the show and excelled at several tasks, such as choosing wine to go with the meal, and he showed an aptitude for mixing cocktails in the last episode.

Since his TV appearance, Jack has become somewhat of a local celebrity in his home town of Berkhamsted.

He said: “The amount of people who have asked me about it! I went into The Crown and some people said ‘Oh look, here he is’ and asked to have a selfie with me.”

Sharon Oliver, manager at supported housing scheme Seymour Court where Jack lives, said: “We all watched the show and really enjoyed it – everyone was talking about it.

“We support all our tenants to live as independently as possible here, and it was wonderful to see one of our residents grow in confidence as the series went on.”
