New 10k run to mark 10 years since Buncefield explosion
A new running event is being held this summer to mark a decade since a major explosion in Hemel Hempstead.
The fun run is being organised by Rennie Grove Hospice Care to mark thirty years of care by Rennie Grove nurses as well as ten years since the blast at the Buncefield oil depot, which was heard more than twenty miles away.
The event starts and finishes at Astley Cooper School in Grovehill, and includes a 10k run, a superhero themed 1.5k fun run, and activities for all the family at the school.
The fun runners will set off at 10am and the 10k runners at 10.30am, with medals, snacks and water provided.
The 10k run is priced at £20 and is open to anyone over 14 costs £5, with under 5s going free.
Prizes will be available for the highest fundraiser of each race, plus the best dressed superhero.
Gillian Barnett, director of fundraising and marketing at Rennie Grove Hospice Care said: “We decided to set up this event in Hemel Hempstead because a lot of nearby towns have something similar but Hemel hasn’t really had anything like this.
“We feel something like this is a good way of bringing together businesses and people.
“It is about regeneration of the town and also marking 30 years of care provided by our hospice staff.”
Anyone who doesn’t fancy taking part in the run is welcome to volunteer as a marshall or with registration on the day.
