More than 40 pupils from Ashlyns, Cavendish, Hemel Hempstead and John F Kennedy secondary schools attended the event, which saw wannabe MPs forming political parties and producing a party manifesto before each leader gave a speech to rally votes for their party.

Following the official vote count the winners were announced by Dacorum Borough Council leader Andrew Williams, with the ‘Dacorum Youth Party’ winning with 20 votes. Prizes and certificates were awarded by the borough’s mayor Allan Lawson.

Cllr Williams said: “It’s fantastic to see so many young people taking advantage of this opportunity to experience the entire democratic process. I hope this event inspires them to get involved in democracy in the future as a voter or maybe even as a candidate.”

The annual event is supported by the Dacorum Youth Forum.
