Moped teen back on the road thanks to fellow biker

A biker who set up an online funding page after a teenager had her moped stolen says he '˜knows how it feels' to be the victim of vandalism.

Gareth Young, 36, set up a GoFundMe page after reading The Gazette’s story about how 17-year-old Molly Peters would have to stump up £200 to fix her beloved Peugeot moped after crooks stole it and damaged it before it was recovered last month.

In just a few days, the total amount had been raised by kind-hearted members of the public who had heard about Molly’s ordeal on social media.

Gareth, who lives in Grovehill, said: “I have had two bikes stolen in my time and both were badly vandalised by the time they were recovered. So I know how it feels.”

After handing over the cheque to Molly at her home in Bennetts End, Gareth said: “She’s a wonderful young lady and I wish her the best of luck.”

Molly, who plays football for Bedmond Ladies and attends St Albans College, said: “It’s amazing, I can’t thank Gareth enough for what he has done. If he hadn’t have set up the page, I would still have been on my first £10!

“And a big thank you to everyone who donated, it’s amazing.”

The moped was stolen from Summer Court in Highfield – despite being chained – before being recovered in Leverstock Green, but the wingmirrors had been torn off and the seat had been damaged.
