The site worker is thought to have suffered a shoulder injury and possibly also hurt his leg following the metre-deep drop on Hicks Road in Markyate.

An ambulance, a rapid response vehicle and the hazardous area response team raced to the scene shortly after 8.45am, where the man was rescued and taken to Luton and Dunstable Hospital.

He is not thought to be in a serious condition.

Fre crews from Hemel Hempstead, Markyate and Watford also attended to support the ambulance service.

Emergency services had left the scene by 10am.

The construction project began in October 2013, and the new homes are replacing a run-down, largely disused industrial area.
