A landmark birthday for special centenarian Annie

Annie Horn was born in Berkhamsted in 1914 and has lived in the town all her life. She left school at the age of 14 and went to work making clothing at the ‘mantle factory’ in Lower Kings Road – now the site of the Waitrose car park.

In 1936 Annie married Gilbert and had a son and two daughters. Gilbert sadly passed away in 1991 but Annie has remained in the family home ever since. She is much admired for her cooking and still prepares her own meals. She now has five grandchildren and five great-children.

Since 1936 she has been a regular churchgoer at Sunnyside church, and was an active member of the church Women’s Meeting group –making lasting friendships.

While the Post Office in George Street was running, Annie was a familiar face at the counter for 12 years. Pupils at the Augustus Smith school in the 1970s may also remember her as a dinner lady.

She contributed to the fundraising efforts of the Hospice of St Francis for more than a decade by knitting and crocheting items for sale in their shop. Annie’s travels have taken her to the USA, Canada and Europe but now she enjoys spending time with family and friends closer to home.
