John says end of epic run was an ‘anticlimax’

A 47-year-old fundraiser has finished running an epic 2,012 miles in 2012 for charity.

Former international decathlete John Garner was raising cash for Music at St John’s, a charity that uses music to educate youngsters.

John, a member of Dacorum and Tring Athletics Club, married his wife Lesley at St John’s Church in Boxmoor, where the charity is based, in 1996. His daughter Ellie, 14, was christened there in 1998.

His last run finished at the Boxmoor church after setting off from from St Albans Abbey on New Year’s Eve. About 30 people joined him for the last mile.

He said: “Finishing was wonderful, but quite bizarre really.

“It becomes a bit of an anticlimax, because the bulk of the excitement around it is the challenge itself.

“While it feels great to have done it, it leaves a bit of a hole and you think, ‘What next?’

“You wake up thinking you have got nothing to do, but it is nice not to have to go out and run.”
