Homeless man charged after machete discovery sparks police chopper and dog unit hunt

A homeless man has been charged with possession of a bladed article after the discovery of a machete sparked a police helicopter and dog unit search on Sunday.

Lewis Dumbarton, 20, of no fixed address, is due to appear at Hatfield Remand Court today.

He handed himself in at Hemel Hempstead Police Station two days ago after initially running off when police stopped him at 6.55pm in Seymour Road, Northchurch.

A 33-year-old man from Berkhamsted who was with him was arrested and has received a police caution for possession of cannabis – but no further action was taken against him.

A machete was found near where the pair had been standing. It is not known why Dumbarton may have been carrying it.
