Guns already surrendered as firearms amnesty begins today

Hertfordshire’s firearms amnesty begins today, allowing people to hand in guns anonymously and without fear of prosecution.

The amnesty is the first in more than a decade and coincides with a national drive to rid the UK’s streets of guns.

A number of firearms have already been surrendered ahead of the start of the amnesty, which runs until November 21.

Crime commissioner David Lloyd said: “Fortunately there is little gun-related crime in the county, but as part of the wider crime prevention and reduction campaigns we run in Hertfordshire, this can only contribute to making the county safer and continue to keep this type of crime low.”

New legislation introduced in July means that some people who already have firearms may now be breaking the law.

But Herts Police say many people come to possess guns and ammunition through inheritance, collecting antiques or by finding them.

If you have a firearm in your possession that you either do not want, should not have or would like to discuss the procedure for getting a certificate for, call police on 01707 806126 or email [email protected] during the amnesty.

Specially trained officers will then arrange to come and collect the weapon, or offer advice on how to apply for the required certificate. Alternatively you can bring the weapon to Watford, Hatfield, Hoddesdon or Stevenage police stations and surrender it.
