Police launch cyber crime awareness event in Hemel Hempstead addressing 'constant threat'

Hertfordshire Constabulary is hosting a cyber security awareness event to address what it says is a ‘constant threat’ to the public.

The police force is running free fraud advice sessions at Hemel Hempstead Library.

Hertfordshire Constabulary has revealed that the event has been arranged by specialist officers working in the cyber domain and it will take place on Wednesday between 10.30am and 3.30pm.

A spokesperson for the police force said: “These sessions are free and provide practical tips for avoiding the most common types of fraud and cybercrime. Free tea and biscuits are also provided.”

Staff from Hertfordshire County Council’s Trading Standards and Fraud teams will also participate in the event and be available to answer questions and provide advice.

Hertfordshire Constabulary has released the following schedule for Wednesday’s event:

-11:00am-noon - Scams & Victim Support Beacon/Victim Care

· 12:15-1:15pm - Rogue Traders & Scams Trading Standards

· 1:30-1:45pm - Fraud against the Council HCC SAFS

· 2:00-3:00pm - Cybercrime & Fraud Prevention Herts Police

Detective Inspector Pete Hankins, from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Serious Fraud and Cyber Unit, said: “Fraud and cybercrime are a constant threat, which has been increasing across the country over recent years. Criminals often prey on the elderly and vulnerable, many of whom prefer to talk to crime prevention experts in person, rather than accessing advice online.

“These sessions are completely free, so please come along during the times advertised. Our experts will be able to give you practical crime prevention advice, to help you avoid common scams and recognise new ones.”
