The Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit says the vehicle failed to stop for police officers.

It was after drawing the attention of officers that the car was driven down the wrong side of the road. The policing unit also confirmed the driver was arrested and held in custody overnight.

A spokesperson for the specialist police unit said: “This is the likely outcome if you fail to stop for police & drive dangerously, putting people’s lives at risk.

“The driver attempted to go the wrong way on an unlit dual carriageway. Tactical contact was made to prevent that.”

The police unit posted photos of the severely damaged car after it had veered off the road on social media.
