Creative stars open studios to the public

Every year since then around 200 glittering artists and craftspeople living or working in the county have opened their studio doors to shine in this popular county wide event.

More than 12,000 visits are expected to be made to artists and craftspeople in their studios across Hertfordshire this month (September). Organised by Herts Visual Arts and a team of volunteers, the event aims to bring an awareness of the diversity of artistic talent throughout the county.

An eclectic mix of creative talent will be on show this month including print making, jewellery, photography, mixed media, ceramics, sculpture and textiles.

Some of the open studios in Dacorum include Frogmore Paper Mill where several artists, including photographer Des Gould will exhibit their work. Mr Gould focuses on the fragility of beauty and the landscape. He said: “I create photos to show both sides.I offer classic and evocative art that addresses real live issues.”

At the Upstairs Gallery in Berkhamsted artists include Jean Langdon who will display her hand build ceramic pots inspired by classical forms; and Alison Berthelsen who produces fresh, modern and quirky pieces of jewellery in silver, gold and semi precious stones. From wedding rings to cufflinks, Ms Berthelsen likes to work with the story behind the idea for her pieces.

Other Dacorum artists exhibiting their work include Brigid Marlin in Berkhamsted who uses egg tempera and oil glazing methods of the Italian Renaissance masters to produce paintings, sculpture and printmaking.

And Brian Robinson from Aldbury creates strong watercolour paintings of the Chilterns and further afield.

Herts Open Studios starts on Saturday (September 5) and lasts until Sunday 27.

The colourful brochure which details all the artists, their locations and the days their studios are open, can be found in libraries, museums and tourist information offices across the county.
