Every year, on the anniversary of his killing, Hertfordshire Constabulary comes together privately with PC Mason’s family to present an award in his honour before a public service in Bank Court - the scene of the murder.

PC Mason was just 27 when his life was cut short as he attempted to stop an armed raid in the town centre. He had been off duty and was walking his dog when he came across the crime in action and bravely stepped in.

The cowardly thieves shot him in the back as he attempted to arrest one of the robbers outside Barclays bank in 1988.

Each year the force presents an award in his name to an outstanding serving officer who has been deemed to have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

The public can pay their respects to PC Mason during the public wreath laying service in Bank Court from 12.30pm on April 14.
