Challenge Yourself: Could you help out our Dragons, or be a real-life Santa to the elderly?

The latest volunteering news and opportunities from the Hemel Hempstead Roundhouse.

Dragons Apprentice Challenge

Are you going to see the Christmas lights turned on in town on the November 30? Why not call in to Volunteer Centre Dacorum in the Roundhouse and let volunteers from Cavendish School make you a warming drink and a snack?

Volunteer Centre Dacorum has teamed up with pupils from the school and a business mentor from Handelsbanken to take part in the Dragons Apprentice Challenge. The challenge facing these young entrepreneurs is to turn £100 into £1,000 by February – and one way they aim to meet this target is by selling drinks and snacks on Sunday November 30. All money raised will go to support the centre’s work with young volunteers, helping them to experience new opportunities and to develop employment related and life skills.

Can you help our real life Santas brighten up Christmas for lonely or isolated older people in our community?

A group of colleagues from Desoutter of Boundary Way, Hemel Hempstead, have volunteered to be real life Santas for the day. They will be teaming up with Age UK Dacorum to deliver Christmas goodies to older people who are unable to join in any of the Christmas parties they organise throughout the borough. All they need now is for all the generous people who have donated gifts in the past to do so again this year.

As usual, they are asking for unwrapped presents including wind up torches, toiletries, sweets, chocolates, biscuits, socks, scarves and gloves or anything else that you think might be suitable for an older person.

You could take your gift to either Age UK Dacorum offices at Half Moon Yard in the High Street or drop them off at Volunteer Centre Dacorum, Marlowes (opposite Superdrug).

The Salvation Army Hemel Hempstead are also asking for donations for their Christmas present appeal for families in need. Donations can be left at Superdrug in the Marlowes.
