Cars are classic '“ and so is long-serving carer

On Sunday August 7, the Berkhamsted care home hosted its annual Classic Car Show, welcoming more than 200 vintage cars and its highest footfall to date.

From two-seater coupés to turn-of-the-century saloons, the show featured more than 30 global manufacturers, including Aston Martin, Dodge, Ferrari, Ford, Jaguar, MG, Mini and Rolls Royce, as well as a number of pre-1950s motorcycles.

Care home manager Diane Delicate said: “The Classic Car Show is one of the most anticipated events on my care home’s calendar – with this year being the busiest show yet.

“I’d like to thank all of the cars’ owners, visitors, and of course my staff, who made it once again an incredible day.”

The highlight of the afternoon was the show’s awards ceremony which saw B&M Care chairman Bill Hughes present the prize for Best Car in Show to Tony Yates and his MG TD. Philip Barton’s Morris Oxford won Best Pre-1940s Car, and David Pittman and his Morris 1000 won the Most Memorable Vehicle award.

Other highlights included a performance from the Watford Brass Band, an ice cream van, a number of games including a raffle and Find the Treasure and a fantastic barbecue headed up by the Ashlyns Care Home kitchen team.

The day was also a celebration for Margaret Gilbert, a member of Ashlyns care staff who has served the home for 19 years this month and during that time she has cared for more than 900 residents.

Berkhamsted resident Margaret, aged 68, said: “It’s lovely, sometimes tiring but very rewarding, and I always do my best.”

Margaret was presented with a bouquet of flowers and an engraved vase by home manager, Diane.
