Berkhamsted High Street could be named UK’s best road

Each year, the accloades recognise 15 great places that have positively improved their economic, social and physical environment in the past 10 to 20 years.

The awards recognise the best, most enduring or improved urban environments.

Berkhamsted High Street is competing against Bridge Street in Taunton and Elwick Road in Ashford for the accolade of Great Street.

Berkhamsted was nominated by the Academy of Urbanism and Dacorum Borough Council took the assessment team on a tour of the High Street in August.

During the tour they judged the street on its local character and amenities as well as how safe and enticing the area is for people.

Large scale improvement work was last carried out in the 1990s to improve street furniture, road crossings and to widen pavements. This has led to the rise of cafe culture in the High Street.

Highlights of the tour also included the Rex Cinema, easy links to the countryside, the train station and 100% retail occupancy.

Assistant director for planning, development and regeneration at the council James Doe said: “I am delighted Berkhamsted High Street has been shortlisted as a finalist.

“It showcases Berkhamsted as a thriving town centre, bucking the trend of many failing High Streets around the UK. This is a great opportunity to put Berkhamsted on the map as a great place for people to live, work and enjoy.”

The winner will be announced at the award ceremony on Friday.
