Anti-social behaviour crackdown in line with new laws

Changes to the way the local authority deals anti-social behaviour affecting its tenants and leasholders have been drafted in line with a new government bill introduced in 2014.

As part of increased local authority powers since the passing of the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Bill, Dacorum Borough Council has already obtained two closure orders for properties in Hemel Hempstead which have been causing a nuisance to others through hard drug use by tenants.

The adoption of the new policy – agreed at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday evening – falls within existing authority budgets, and allows the council greater powers in tackling incidents of anti-social behaviour through such property closures and ‘injunctions’ against anyone over the age of 10 causing a nuisance or harrasment in residential and non-residential areas.

The policy states: “Dacorum Borough Council recognsies that the problems created by anti-social behaviour need to be addressed in a robust but proportionate manner.

“Residents are entitles to live in a quiet and peaceful environment and where appropriate the council will aim to act quickly and efficiently to tackle incidents.

“We will not tolerate incidents of anti-social behaviour and this will be made clear to all tenants, prospective tenants and residents of the borough.”

The report goes on to ensure all complaints relating to anti-social behaviour are taken seriously and are investigated fairly and swiftly, working with other organisations such as police and courts where appropriate.
