The work is carried out by Ringway who is contracted by Herts County Council to maintain more than 3,000 miles of road.

Hertfordshire is the second busiest county council maintained road network in the UK, closely behind Surrey, and sees more than five billion vehicle miles travelled every year.

Terry Douris, who oversees highways, said: “We share our residents’ views that well-maintained, safe streets and roads are extremely important, and that’s why our teams are out maintaining roads and footpaths on a daily basis.

“Like other counties, we have limited funds available to maintain the roads, so we need to prioritise what we can repair and make the best use of our resources. We believe the approach we use is the most effective and maintains our roads safely within the available budgets.”

The council was granted an extra £2.2 million from the national pothole repair fund to tackle the problem and £3.7 million earlier this year to fix flood related damage.
