Wonderful with Connie in town

HAVING opened to rave reviews at The Lowry in Salford, the musical Wonderful Town is starting its national tour at Milton Keynes Theatre on April 23.

Starring Connie Fisher, who found fame in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s TV talent show, the comedy–musical is a revival of the Broadway show which first opened in 1953.

Based on the true story of two sisters chasing their dreams in New York and falling for the same man (Michael Xavier) this latest version is a spectacular joint creation by The Lowry, The Royal Exchange Theatre and The Hallé Orchestra.

Connie said: “I am really excited about the great reviews the show has had so far and the way my voice has been received.”

Connie had serious surgery on her vocal cords which means she is now more suited to alto parts than soprano.

She describes this first alto part in the vibrant swinging musical as ‘very jazzy, much better for me.”

She said: “This is a great transition from Maria. I’m quite similar to my character, Ruth, as she is really ambitious and I can identify with that. I think I have made the character my own. She’s a writer who is always in the shadow of her classically beautiful sister, and has to try and win the man with her wit and humour. It’s my first major comedy role, but I worked with Alistair McGowen before and learnt a lot from him, that was a brilliant experience. This really is a funny show and I’m really excited about going to each town and seeing what makes them laugh in different places.”

Director Braham Murray said: ““To direct a great musical with a fabulous orchestra and world renowned conductor is a dream come true. There is only one word to describe it. Wonderful.”
