Will restaurant fill final empty space left by former Royal Mail sorting office?

One of the three units in the complex that used to be home to Berkhamsted's Royal Mail sorting office is still empty after four months

The Berkhamsted High Street building was extended and converted by Metric Property and is now home to a Marks & Spencer Simply Food store and a Costa Coffee.

But a third unit that makes up the development still lies empty – four months after the other two businesses opened. The unit has an outdoor, decked seating area.

Lothbury Property Trust Company – which bought the development from Metric Property on Friday, May 30 – says a new restaurant could soon be moving into the third unit.

Lothbury fund manager Amy Scanlan said that since her firm took over the property, it has produced a marketing brochure with new photography to promote the unit.

She said: “Restaurant operators tend to like to get a ‘feel’ for the space before they commit to a lease. The brochure was circulated to restaurant operators and agents just over a month ago in July 2014.

“We have since received interest and undertaken viewings with a number of national and independent operators. We are now considering which restaurant operator to progress lease discussions with.

“Lothbury recognises that catering is an essential part of the tenant mix in a successful and sustainable high street.

“As such we are dedicated to providing a quality restaurant and interesting concept to appeal to the affluent catchment of Berkhamsted and to compliment and add variety to the existing strong catering offer in the town.”
