Historic Hertfordshire pub named after legendary highwaywoman set to reveal all later this week after show-stopping refurbishment.

The Wicked Lady, a pub steeped in legend and history, is set to reopen its doors this week following an extensive refurbishment that celebrates both its past and its exciting future.

Located at the edge of Nomansland Common in Wheathampstead, on the outskirts of St Albans, The Wicked Lady has long been a cornerstone of the local community. The pub takes its name from Katherine Ferrers, the legendary 17th-century highwaywoman known as the "Wicked Lady" who, according to folklore, rode across Nomansland Common under cover of darkness. This rich heritage continues to captivate visitors who come to experience not only the pub's warm hospitality but also its connection to one of Hertfordshire's most enduring tales.

Ideally placed for exploring Hertfordshire’s stunning countryside, The Wicked Lady is in a prime position for days out with friends and family, whether visiting Heartwood Forest’s arboretum or nearby Devil’s Dyke, an impressive earthwork perfect for scenic walks and a glimpse into the region’s ancient past.

The new-look pub has been completely transformed inside. Reflecting the quality of both the service and the environment, every step has been taken to provide a sophisticated yet warm and welcoming atmosphere for guests. The entire interior has been gutted and thoughtfully refurbished with opulent burnt orange and rich purple tones, while plush fabrics have been blended with carefully upcycled and other reused elements.

The bar area features intimate ‘mini-rooms’ with four cosy alcoves, separated by elegant display cabinets. Fireplaces in both the bar and restaurant areas create the perfect ambiance as colder nights draw in, whilst the open-plan restaurant boasts an impressively high ceiling that adds to the sense of space and grandeur.

Jessica Vakos, General Manager of The Wicked Lady, who has been with the pub for three years and with Mitchells & Butlers since 2019, shared her excitement about the reopening: "We want The Wicked Lady to be the place to be – where everyone feels comfortable and every occasion can be celebrated. This is a place of value, quality, and good vibes, and our team puts guests at the heart of everything we do, from the minute they park to the moment they come through the door. Every step of the journey, our guests' happiness is the driving force behind everything we do.

"The refurbishment honours both our incredible history and our vision for the future. Whether you're popping in for a drink after a walk on the Common, celebrating a special milestone, or simply enjoying a meal with loved ones, we're here to create memorable moments for everyone who walks through our doors."

At the helm of the kitchen is Head Chef Alex Gheorghitoaia, who brings two years of dedication to The Wicked Lady and an impressive 20 years of culinary experience across Europe. His expertly crafted menu showcases the finest seasonal ingredients and delivers exceptional dishes that perfectly complement the pub's elevated atmosphere.
