Gilwell Park, the historic home of Scouting, has officially opened the Syd Kesseler Centre, a new hub designed to provide an inspiring and engaging first point of arrival for visitors. The centre celebrates Scouting impact and heritage as well as being a gateway to adventure.

The opening event, held on Tuesday, Novembe, 18 brought together supporters, partners, and members of the local community to mark this milestone, including generous benefactors from the Kesseler family, whose support made the project possible.

The Syd Kesseler Centre honours the memory of Sydney Kesseler, a passionate Scout with the 58th Midland Scouts in Birmingham, whose values of community and adventure continue to inspire future generations.

Dr Michael Kesseler FRCP said: “My father, Syd Kesseler, a passionate Scout with the 58th Midland Scouts, Birmingham, believed deeply in the power of faith, community, and adventure in preparing young people for life.

"I’m incredibly proud to support this project in his memory, creating a safe and welcoming gateway to Gilwell Park, which embodies the values he held so dear and celebrates Scouts’ heritage, and inspires future generations to the spirit of Scouting.”

Jude Gaskill, Beaver Scout, who was part of the celebration said: “It was really exciting meeting the Chief Scout and being one of the first Scouts in the new building. I can’t wait to have my next adventure at Gilwell Park.”

Chief Scout Dwayne Fields added: “The Syd Kesseler Centre is so much more than just a building - it’s a welcoming gateway to Gilwell Park. Thousands of people come here every year, and from the moment you arrive, it gives you a real sense of what Scouts is all about - a safe, friendly, and inspiring space where everyone feels part of something bigger.

"It helps visitors find their way, learn about our rich heritage, and take a moment to reflect, connect, and be inspired. It truly captures the spirit of Scouts - open, inclusive, and always bringing people together’.
