Hertfordshire-based fit out and refurbishment contractor Pexhurst has completed the first donations awarded through its charitable trust, supporting local education provision and national autism initiatives as part of its commitment to creating positive social impact in the communities it has served for almost 50 years.

Following the formal launch of the Pexhurst Charitable Trust in 2025 by internal trustees Kayla Vella, Charlotte Harris and Rosy Vella, the trust raised more than £50,000 within its first year. Two organisations have since been selected as the first successful applicants, with Greenside SEND School and National Autistic Society awarded funding, marking the beginning of the trust’s grant-giving activity.

The donation to Greenside SEND School in Stevenage has enabled the purchase of three iPads equipped with specialist communication software, providing Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCA) for pupils with severe learning difficulties, autism and complex communication needs. The technology allows non-speaking learners to express their needs, make choices and engage more confidently in day-to-day school life.

Communication lead at Greenside SEND School, said: “Many of our learners rely on augmentative and alternative communication to make themselves understood. The iPads funded through the Pexhurst Charitable Trust have already made a real difference, giving pupils a voice and helping them communicate more independently throughout the school day.”

Meanwhile, the funding awarded to the National Autistic Society will directly support its Young Ambassadors Training Workshop, which empowers young autistic people to raise awareness, share lived experiences and drive positive change by developing skills in communication and public engagement. The funding enables the training to be delivered online, helping to support knowledge-sharing and build confidence among young participants.

Corporate philanthropy officer at the National Autistic Society, said: “Donations like the Pexhurst Charitable Trust directly enable vital initiatives such as our Young Ambassadors Training Workshop, which encourages young individuals to develop their public speaking skills for future education and employment. The contribution is truly appreciated, and it’s helping to build a more inclusive and supportive society for autistic people and their families.”

The Pexhurst Charitable Trust is funded through a combination of company contributions, voluntary employee donations and annual fundraising events, with a structured application process ensuring support reaches individuals and organisations with genuine need. Further grant rounds are planned throughout the year as the trust continues to grow.

Kayla Vella, senior client relationship and marketing manager at Pexhurst, said: “Seeing the trust make its first donations is a proud moment for everyone at Pexhurst. From supporting pupils with complex communication needs to helping young autistic people find their voice, these first grants reflect exactly why the trust was established - to make a meaningful, practical difference where it matters most.”

Most recently, the trust has made a further donation to East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity, ensuring the Therapy Pony visits to Lister Hospital are fully funded for 2026. The visits aim to enhance patient wellbeing and bring moments of comfort and positivity to those receiving care.

Applications for funding are now open again, with the deadline in March. For more information, please contact: [email protected]
