Whipsnade Zoo provides a special day out for special kids

The zoo is running its popular inclusive event, which caters specifically for children with additional needs, along with their families and friends, on Saturday (June 13).

Highlights include Animal LIVE! talks accompanied by British Sign Language interpreters, sensory storytelling sessions, wildlife gardening, The Discovery Zone, and performances by Singing Hands who use Makaton to engage all ages in their stories and songs.

A team of dedicated volunteers will help ensure families have a fantastic day out. Barclays Digital Eagles will be on site running a Code Playground to introduce children and their families to coding, with sessions tailored to meet a range of needs and abilities, including children with visual impairments.

Discovery and Learning Inclusion Officer Hannah Pritchard said: “This event is so wonderful because it provides lots of different ways for children to engage with Whipsnade Zoo’s exhibits, animals and talks. Children tell us they love taking part in all the different activities, and families often appreciate an opportunity to spend quality time together in an accessible, inclusive environment.”

With increased dedicated staff and facilities, as well as special interactive events and discounted entry, Special Children’s Day is special indeed.

Adult entry is £12.75, children (three - 18) £8.50, children under three free. One carer per child with S.E.N.D. can get in for free.

Shows and activities are free and run throughout the day. Car parking is free all day in the main car park. The zoo opens at 10am.
