Some would say Berkhamsted can’t compete with the bright lights of the Big Apple, but US actor Tim Ahern doesn’t agree.

The Mirrors actor ditched the latter for the former 11 years ago, after a chance visit to a modelling agency resulted in him falling in love with the town – and he hasn’t looked back since.

He said: “I’ve lived in cities all my life, but Berkhamsted is pretty little town and it’s got the beautiful Ashridge woods nearby.”

And how did he come across the town? Purely by chance, it seems. He recalls: “‘We were visiting a modelling agency just outside of Berkhamsted, and they told us we should go down into the town to have a look at the High Street.

“We fell in love with the place’

And the commuter-belt town is in perfect proximity to London, where Tim is currently playing the role of Faulkner in an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel Strangers On A Train produced by Barbara Broccoli, daughter of James Bond movie supremo Albert.

Tim said: “Barbara is a wonderful, hands-on producer and I’m making the most of my part, even though it’s small –but I’m OK with that!

“The play is in a cinematic-style, and it really flows. It’s almost like you’re watching a 1950s or 60s film on stage.”

Strangers On A Train is at the Gielgud Theatre until February 22.
