The charity is well known for its conservation work around the world, and 18-year-old Kane Funnell says he has been motivated by the organisation’s efforts to protect endangered pandas .

“I was inspired after I ran a 10k race last year and wanted to try and tackle a harder challenge,” said Kane.

“I’m running for WWF team panda; they set up conservation projects to protect their habitat and do community development to deter poachers.

“Pandas are an endangered species with less than 1,600 left in the wild,” he added. “Their habitat is under serious threat due to mining alongside their habitat being destroyed and poachers hunting them.

“To me, it’s frustrating and upsetting to see that the human race has brought an innocent species to its last legs, making it nearly extinct.”

Kane studies plumbing at college three days per week, while working alongside a plumber for the remaining days of the week, and working at Sainsbury’s at the weekends.

Despite his hectic workload, however, the teenager has been able to fit in four runs per week, alongside swimming on his days off.

“I can’t wait for the marathon and I’m very excited,” said Kane. “I’m a little nervous for the run because it’s a bit daunting.

“However it’s an amazing achievement to have accomplished, especially for a great cause.

“I have a JustGiving page and I would be forever grateful for any support and donations I receive.”
