Super six for Berkhamsted as winning weekend keeps promotion dreams alive

Berkhamsted & Hemel Hempstead Hockey Club enjoyed six victories this weekend, including the men’s first team getting the better of West Herts to leapfrog them at the top of the table.

The ladies’ and men’s second teams also remain in line for promotion with key wins in their leagues.

The men’s third XI got back to winning ways with superb 5-1 win against West Herts, while two wins in two weeks has seen the men’s fourths fight their way back into contention.

Elsewhere, three wins in four weeks means the ladies’ third team are showing real promotion promise, with a creditable fourth place being their likely finish if they can continue their current form.

There were, however, a couple of defeats for the club as the ladies’ first XI lost against runaway league leaders Saffron Walden and the men’s fifths were beaten 1-0 in a tight game against St Albans.

On Sunday, the ladies’ firsts earned another point in a 0-0 draw against Bishop Stortford.

The men’s first XI were clinical in their approach to their must-win encounter with West Herts. The 4-1 victory included goals from Simon Royal (2), Pete Allam and James Barron as they stormed to the top of the league with two games to go.

The men’s second team had a tight encounter against a youthful Broxbourne side, but they eventually recorded a 6-2 win with goals from Roger Payton (3), Tom Moorhouse, Alex Macindoe and Paul Whitby.

The men’s thirds put their mini goal drought behind them with an emphatic 5-1 victory against West Herts to hold their place in the promotion zone. Goalscorers this week were Mark Robinson (2), Will Goodwyn (2) and Tim Westley.

The men’s fourths won 4-1, with youngsters Andrew Whittaker and Ollie Webb getting on the scoresheet, while the fifths were very frustrated to lose 1-0 against St Albans.

The ladies’ second XI provided an outstanding performance once again with a 5-1 win away at Bedford, but it is the thirds who are rapidly becoming the club’s most improved team as a tough trip away to Royston resulted in a 3-0 win
