Sam, 31, recently qualified to represent Great Britain at the ITU World Sprint Duathlon Championships after she finished first in her age group and second female overall to take one of four qualifying spots at the Bedford Autodrome Duathlon.

“The field was tough as the Championships will be held in Spain this year,” said Sam. “This was a very popular event for age group athletes, making potential qualification all the harder.”

Despite the challenge she faced from some hardy competitors, Sam produced an excellent performance to seal her spot at the World Championships in Aviles, Spain in June.

“I have been working extremely hard over the past six months, getting myself ready for the event,” she said. “I purchased my first road bike only a year ago, and purchased my first race bike this time last year.

“I am part of a running club and joined a bike race team to enhance my skills – thankfully those efforts weren’t squandered, and I got an instant qualification to the World Sprint Distance Championships – a dream come true.”

Since this success, two local coaches have approached Sam and asked to work with her, as they believe she has a realistic chance of claiming a podium spot in Aviles.

However, she now needs help from sponsors to help cover the costs of kit and travel as she embarks on her quest for the world title.

“I work full-time and fit my training in around my busy schedule,” Sam continued. “I have never asked for any help previously, but I believe I have the potential to reach my goals with a little help.

“I am part of several clubs and believe others could be inspired by my story.”
