A smashing Vase victory sees Berkhamsted through to the last-16 of national competition

The Berkhamsted men’s first team dominated their Vase match against Phoenix and Ranalagh to book their place in the last-16 of the national knock-out tournament.

The narrow 2-1 scoreline disguises the dominance that Berko enjoyed as they secured the victory with second half goals from captain Pete Allam and Simon Royal.

Meanwhile, the unbeaten ladies’ second XI continue to have a great season after beating promotion challengers Bedford in emphatic style with a 4-0 victory. Georgie Barnett scored two of the goals.

The men’s third team also got back to winning ways with a hard fought 3-2 victory against West Herts.

They played some excellent hockey in the process and deserved to score more goals than they did. Frank Smits helped himself to a brace.

The ladies’ fourths also won this week in their friendly game against Iver Heath. Some brilliant youngsters really impressed in the young development side, with Lily Fitzsimons getting the goal in a 1-0 triumph.

The only draw of the weekend involved the ladies’ third XI in their clash against Royston. A very close game ended 2-2 with Rachel Vickery scoring both of Berko’s goals.

The ladies’ first team, meanwhile, battled hard against promotion challengers Saffron Walden, but they eventually went down 1-0. They were unlucky to not get anything from the game.

Previous to their Vase heroics, the men’s firsts were also playing promotion challengers and also failed to get a positive result, losing 3-1 against West Herts. Fortunately they had the Sunday game to make amends.

Elsewhere in the club, the men’s fourth team struggled against a rather bolstered lower table Blueharts team, going down 6-0.

The men’s fifths also came out second best in a tight tussle with West Herts as they were edged out 3-2.
