Run proves fun for JFK as fundraising starts

Pupils and staff at John F Kennedy School donned their running shoes and put on some crazy costumes to take part in their annual 10km fun run on Friday morning.

Youngsters from Year 7 up to the sixth form as well as teachers took part in the race which was raising money for the building of a new multi-million pound site at the Hollybush Lane School.

The school successfully bid for 8.2m funding from the Department for Education and Skills and received planning permission from Dacorum Borough Council last month for the project, which would have an up-to-date sports hall as well as new areas to teach sport, drama, music, and art and for learning support and sixth form study.

Sport England have provided an additional 320,000 for the project but as a Voluntary Aided School, John F Kennedy are required to raise 20 per cent of the costs for the facility, which they aim to complete and open by September 2009.

Rock stars, pirates, a robot, a nun and a space monster were just some of the outfits worn as both young and old in a field of around 900 completed the tough course, with some running, while some took it easy and walked the route.

The senior race was won by 14-year-old Matthew Salt, who completed the race in a time of 39mins 53secs.

The new facilities, which will be located at the back of the school, facing onto woodland on the current site, will be timber clad, with the aim being to enhance the environment.

Maximum use of natural light is expected to reduce energy costs, while a woodchip boiler will meet most of the school's power needs.

The site will also benefit badminton, with the facility planned to be used out of school hours as a centre to develop the sport in the community.

The school hope to raise a good amount towards the funds required through Friday's race, with pupils collecting sponsorship this week for their efforts in completing the 10km distance.

A number of other fundraising events are being lined up by the school to help them meet their target.

A Quiz night is being held on Saturday, April 28, while a Ladies Pamper Evening will be held on Friday, May 18.
