Regiment Fitness gets the troops in shape

Gyms, swimming pools and five-a-side football pitches are all well-known pastures for exercise enthusiasts to get their fitness fill, but the great outdoors is making a real revival.

Few will argue against the benefits of getting some fresh are into the lungs, and army-stile exercise company Regiment Fitness is making the most of the region’s green spaces.

The brainchild of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers sergeant Steve Nodwell, Regiment Fitness leads sessions every week in parks all over Herts, Beds and Bucks – including one of its newest ventures on The Moor in Berkhamsted.

Led by Steve and fellow instructor Luke Baverstock, the Berkhamsted sessions began earlier this year and run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, as well as Thursday mornings.

“You see other companies setting up sessions but they perhaps don’t have the qualifications we do and they might not have been in the army,” said Steve.

“We know how hard people want to be pushed – some lads want to be pushed until they are sick and some ladies need it to be a bit more relaxed.”

Steve came up with the idea of Regiment Fitness when he was serving in Afghanistan, and his business model blossomed from there.

He said: “I was taking the troops in their PT and was getting inundated with requests to run sessions for British soldiers and American soldiers and I just thought I’d like to get back to the UK to replicate this for the general public.”

And what is it that Steve believes sets Regiment Fitness aside from its rivals? “It’s not like any other boot camp,” he said. “All our vans are fully equipped and our evening sessions are floodlit with eco solar panels, so we are just that bit better than everyone else.”

And it seems that the company’s users agree with Steve, with numbers continuing to grow and sessions now available in 19 locations including Hemel Hempstead, Luton, Aylesbury, Leighton Buzzard, Milton Keynes and Dunstable.
