The men’s first team took their good pre-season form into the first league game with a fine 3-2 win over Stevenage. Goals came from Pete Allam and a brace from James Barron.

The performance of the day must go to the men’s fourths, who had what looked like the toughest trip, away to Shefford and Sandy. They demolished the opposition 6-1 with Will Hanwell scoring a hat-trick.

The men’s third XI had their traditional battle with Bedford Vets and shared the spoils in a high-scoring 5-5 draw, while the best result from the ladies’ section came from the second team who beat Royston 3-2.

The men’s fifths have also started the season in fine form with a 2-0 win, but the ladies’ first XI struggled in their season opener with a 3-0 defeat away at Leighton Buzzard.

Elsewhere, the newly-promoted men’s second team were the one men’s side to lose on Saturday as they went down 3-1.

They were playing against newly-relegated Bedford and, even though the two teams were two leagues apart last season, it was pleasing for Berko to see how competitive the game was.

The Berko team is made up of three sets of father/son pairings – Nick and Matt Prowse, Jamie and Ed Holderness, and Ben Morehouse along with sons Morris and Thomas.

Meanwhile, the newly formed ladies’ fourth team had a tough debut game against a strong Bicester side as they were beaten 7-0.

After losing a couple of players shortly before the game, the ladies’ thirds struggled against a strong Rickmansworth II team and went down 5-0 following promotion last season.
