Pendley players celebrate 40 years of lacrosse action

The club was founded in 1974, by four women whose husbands were always playing sport, in order to ‘further and stimulate the interests and recreation of the game of lacrosse for women and girls in the area’.

Not only have Pendley players enjoyed many happy years of the sport – winning a hatful of trophies – but lasting friendships have been made, and players from all over the country came back to Berkhamsted for the 40 Year On Celebration.

An exhibition game was played, with the Veteran Pendley side – consisting of a number of ex-internationals – taking on the newly refurbished Berkhamstedians Pendley 1974 team.

The experienced veterans were thrilled to win 7-4, although they did have some young guns to help them on their way to victory.

A celebratory tea was held after the game, with the past players going over old match reports, newspaper cuttings and photos.

Mags Wood, president of the club from 1974, was presented with an engraved wine glass and lacrosse stick in recognition of her advice, help and support for the over the 40 years.

The club, now called Berkhamstedians Pendley 1974, play friendly matches, tournaments and league games at weekends, with the home pitch on Chesham Road Playing Fields.

Training is on Tuesdays from 6.30pm to 8pm at the Knox-Johnston Sports Centre on Kings Road.

Everyone is welcome to go along and give the sport a try.
