Sharks shot down by classy Cowboys
The newly-formed Hemel Cowboys delivered an impressive display on the court as they beat local rivals Hemel Sharks 48-38.
The Cowboys – who only came together as a team in January – started the game well and their man-to-man defence seemed to catch the Sharks by surprise in the opening stages.
Despite this it was the Sharks who took a first quarter lead – before the Cowboys turned the game on its head in the second stanza.
The Sharks had subbed off a number of their best ball handlers, and those that came on court were making loose passes, ball handling errors, and looked instantly under pressure from the Cowboys’ man marking.
The Sharks’ defence got pulled out of place and they missed several good opportunities to score – allowing the Cowboys to open up close to a 20-point lead.
Half-time couldn’t come quick enough for the Sharks, but they regrouped at the interval and began to come back into the game at the start of the third quarter.
It became a real contest, and the Sharks started to nullify the Cowboys’ three-point shooters, who were their main weapon in attack.
The Sharks were creating far more clear scoring opportunities, but they could not finish their chances.
The Cowboys played intelligently, looking to run the clock down as the Sharks hesitated, and their strong, organised and efficient play resulted in a deserved win.
The Cowboys squad was made up of: Adam Chaplin, Matt Klein, Ben Johnson, Greg Harvey, Carl Wingrove, and James Doyle.
