The scheme is proving to be as popular today as it was when it started 15 years ago – continuing to encourage women of all ages to have a go at the sport without committing immediately to joining a club.

Penny Kent, who organises the initiative, said; “I’d always been keen on having a go at golf but most clubs require a handicap before you can join.

“I found out about the new starters’ scheme at Berkhamsted, joined as a ‘temporary lady’ and am now a full member enjoying both the playing and great social side of the club.”

Part of the scheme means ladies can pay a reduced fee, and also included are two free lessons with the club professional.

Ladies will also have a ‘buddy’ to support them, and will be able to join in with fun and social events and light-hearted rules sessions.

Penny added: “I’ve been involved in a number of sports – both playing and coaching – at all levels for most of my life, but I’m aware that some very active sports have a time limit.

“This isn’t the case with golf which I can play for as long as I feel I want to keep satisfying my competitive spirit, as well as having fun whilst keeping fit and active.”

Berkhamsted Golf Club has a thriving women’s section, offering the option of playing during the week and/or with the Business Ladies on Saturday mornings.
