Important wins for Berko hockey sides in tough conditions
On a rather windswept day, a couple of this weekend’s highlights for Berkhamsted & Hemel Hempstead Hockey Club came from the men’s 5s and the ladies’ 3s who both enjoyed significant wins.
The ladies’ 3s played a very good spirited game against Bedford and came out with a tight 1-0 victory; Chelsie Cella being voted player of the match for her brilliant defensive performance.
The men’s 5s suddenly came up with an impressive 2-0 win away at Stevenage, with the hero of the day being young Tom Walker who scored both goals for Berko.
Elsewhere, the Ladies 2s had a barnstorming top of the table battle with Stevenage which ended up all square. The Berko team are confounding all following three straight promotions and are now four points clear in this season’s promotion challenge.
The men’s 1s are also continuing to pull out impressive displays. This week they drew 3-3 with fourth placed Brentwood 1s, making it four draws in their last six games.
A tougher challenge faces them this week with top of the table Wapping coming to RAF Halton.
Meanwhile, a rather long injury list seems to be growing across the club, however the worst injury befell an opposition player as the men’s second tem saw their game abandoned against Bishop’s Stortford.
The player in question had a very unlucky deflection off his own stick and the ball struck him in the face, leading to a nasty injury.
However, both the player and Bishop’s Stortford were very grateful for the impressive medical treatment they received on the pitch from Berko and also the Sportspace Tring staff.
