In-form Camelot Knights turn on the style against Biggleswade II

After last week’s hard fought win over UCS Old Boys, the Knights were buzzing in advance of another important league fixture.

The influx of another group of excellent players enlisted by Ollie Martin and Aaron Higgs had further bolstered the already excellent squad.

It seemed that the confidence was well placed and some great work by the forwards to link up with the back line led to a very early try from the superb debutant Aaron Austin, breaking over the line from 5 metres out.

Some controversial decisions by the referee then saw Camelot’s discipline briefly let them down, giving away several penalties in quick succession.

This led to a sustained effort by Biggleswade who managed to draw level with a well worked try.

However, some excellent ball handling through Dylan Bransgove, Aaron Higgs and Ashley Fyson allowed Barrie Matthews to show his incredible speed and composure to touch down in the corner from 25 metres out to restore the lead.

Hemel led 10-8 at half-time after allowing Biggleswade to convert a penalty just before the break.

Some wise words from Jamie Waterman-Allen and team captain Jon Byrne led to a much calmer start to the second half by Hemel and a blood replacement brought Stephen Nouri on at centre for Austin.

The Hemel forwards barely lost a scrum in the second half, dominating a very heavy Biggleswade pack as Ben Goodman, Chaz Baker and Andy McHutcheon showed the makings of a formidable front row partnership.

Further lapses of discipline saw Camelot receive three yellow cards in quick succession but, undaunted, the Knights responded with an onslaught of big hits from Ed IsJunior, Fyson, Oli Toms, Jack Field and Andy McHutcheon.

Exhausted, Biggleswade seemed to lose heart and further tries from IsJunior and Matthews subdued them completely.

Further changes saw Ollie Martin and Chris Eccles replaced by the lively Toby Couzens and a return from injury from Ross Merrett, who scored the final and best try of the day; collecting the ball from the half-way line and scything through the whole Biggleswade team. Matthews converted to complete the tally.

A special mention must go to Jack Field who received his second man of the match award on the trot.

Field showed incredible strength at the breakdown and composure and determination throughout the match, setting up at least two of the tries for his team-mates
