The Berkhamsted & Hemel Hempstead Hockey Club ladies’ first team continue to go from strength to strength – winning their latest match 3-1 in a top of the table clash against Leighton Buzzard.

This is a significant win in a long campaign and shows how well they are developing this season.

The ladies’ 2s, meanwhile, went into uncharted territory when they scored three times in a game for the first time this season.

Up to now, they have won every game by scoring two goals, but they managed to beat Saffron Walden 3-0 this week despite playing without a goalkeeper.

Elsewhere, the ladies’ 3s had a brilliant game against runaway league leaders Shefford and Sandy as they were edged out 1-0. The narrow loss is testament to the progress the team are making and they should be very proud of how they played.

Equally, the ladies’ fourth team put in a gutsy performance against Luton 2s, but eventually fell to a 3-1 defeat.

However, the men’s section were again less successful; although goalscoring is not proving a problem, with most teams scoring fairly freely, it’s the defence that needs work.

After three draws this season, the men’s 4s had a great chance to earn their first win but managed to draw again somehow as they shared a six-goal thriller with Stevenage. Man of the match Brett Kelley had a fine game in goal, while Ben Moorhouse scored a hat-trick from short corners and also hit the post a further couple of times .

The men’s second XI managed to give up a 3-0 lead to lose 4-3 against Stevenage 1s, while the men’s 1s had the pleasure of playing at the Olympic Park. It was an entertaining game, with 11 goals being scored; Berko scored four of them and deserved a few more.

However, low half-term availability had its effect on the men’s 5s who suffered an 8-0 defeat in the late game at Shefford & Sandy.
