Two losses on the spin as the Comrades are hit for four by St Margaretsbury

Berkhamsted’s inconsistent form continued on Saturday as they suffered a crushing 4-1 defeat at the hands of St Margaretsbury.

Berko boss Mick Vipond made three changes from the side that were beaten by London Colney, recalling Courtney Massay and Jamie Gavin in place of Ryan Laville and Josh Chamberlain.

Frankie Jowle returned after a three-month absence in the unaccustomed position of goalkeeper, with Carl Tasker working abroad and Ben Barnes injured.

The revamped Berko side camped in the visitors’ half for the first half hour, and Adiel Mannion put Berko in front in the 12th minute with a fierce short past Lee Robison, before the visitors kept out a Massay effort.

All the action was at the Railway End, with Ed Canham heading over and Max Farrelly also coming close.

However it was the Saints who struck next to equalise in the 35th minute with a fortunate goal as Ken Ashwood was trying to cross the ball from the left wing but it flew over Jowle into the far corner of the net.

Mark Summers then netted with a shot in the 50th minute to put St Margaretsbury ahead, and a defensive mix-up left Jowle exposed for Ricky Light to effectively win the game with a third goal in the 65th minute.

New signing Warren Garcia came on for his Berko debut but did not see much of the ball in the remainder of the game.

Chamberlain came on and had one good volley that cleared the bar at the Canal End, but a fierce shot from Summers completed the scoring late on.

Reserve team striker Pierce Kelly also got a brief run out for Berko.
