Tring Athletic up to ninth following midweek win over Holmer Green

Tring Athletic picked up their second home win in three days and moved up to ninth place in the SSML Premier Division as they beat Holmer Green 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Tring had a good chance to go ahead as early as the first minute when Chris Vardy’s cross was met by Kieran Turner who slid the ball just wide of the post.

The hosts did take the lead in the 16th minute following a good run by Ryan Sturges and a square pass to Turner, who scored with a left-footed shot from 20 yards.

Holmer were forced to change their goalkeeper in the 23rd minute, fielding another member of their starting XI between the sticks.

This enforced change might have given Athletic a psychological boost, but that was soon to be shattered as Green defended a 27th minute Tring free-kick before breaking away to equalise.

Tring were not to be down for long and showed their resolve just two minutes later as they regained the lead. Sturges provided his second assist of the match, this time crossing for Vardy who scored with his head.

Athletic extended their lead in the 59th minute, with Sturges again involved in the build-up.

This time he played the ball to Turner, who hit a great cross for Vinnie Iannone to fire the ball into the roof of the net.

Just two minutes later, Kevin McManus hit the post on a rare run forward before Iannone went into the referee’s notebook for a mistimed challenge.

Sam Joliffe hit his own crossbar in the 75th minute, before Taylor Collins had a late chance to add a bit of gloss to the scoreline but was denied by the replacement keeper.

On Saturday Tring entertain 10th-placed Biggleswade United in the league.
