‘Still lots to improve on’ says Hemel Town boss Brennan

The Tudors went in front in the first half through a free-kick from captain Jordan Parkes, but the visitors hit back after half-time and Hemel had to settle for a point.

“We created ten clear goal scoring opportunities, which was very pleasing,” said Brennan. “But at the same time only scoring one goal from a direct free-kick is also tad frustrating for everyone at the football club.

“We played some really good football at times in the first half and, to give credit to the opposition, they looked very dangerous on the counter attack and scored a very good team goal.

“For all our good work in the first half, we got very sloppy in the second half and the players became frustrated by giving up possession too easily too many times.

“We needed to keep our shape better to make sure we kept it tight and defended our lead better. Over the full 90 minutes it was an OK performance for me and there is still lots we can improve on.

“I think Weston Super Mare will be very pleased with the 1-1 result, but for me it’s two points dropped.”

The Tudors are still looking for their first home win of the season, and Brennan says his players are fully aware of what is expected of them.

“Our players’ game management needs to improve,” said the Hemel boss. “We can’t afford to be so gung-ho when we are in control of the game and in the lead.

“We need to be more mature and keep our shape better by working from each individual players’ starting position.”

At the time the Gazette went to press, Hemel were preparing for a Trip to Havant and Waterlooville – a game Brennan was targeting a win from.

He said: “The only way we make Saturday’s result a good point is by going to Havant on Tuesday and getting all three points.

“I’m expecting a very tough game against a vastly experienced team who came sixth last season, only missing out on the playoffs by one goal.

“We will go there with a game plan and it’s very important for us that we keep our discipline, and make sure we keep working hard collectively as a team.”

Brennan had one last word for the Hemel faithful who were out in force at Vauxhall Road on Saturday: “I’d like to thank our supporters for their performance on Saturday and it was great to hear the drum for the first time this season.

“The atmosphere was top class and I know the players appreciate it. Keep up the good work.”
