Mistakes prove costly as Berko boss Vipond is left frustrated

Berkhamsted manager Mick Vipond was left frustrated by a poor display defensively as his side lost 3-2 at Broadwater against Biggleswade United.

“It was really poor to be honest with you, we weren’t expecting to win the game once we were 3-1 down at half-time,” Vipond said as Berko lost their fourth league game in six.

Mistakes in defence ultimately cost the Comrades, however Vipond still felt his side had done enough to come away with at least a point.

“We were pretty poor defensively, but we had opportunities ,” he said. “However we didn’t make the most of it; all in all it was a very flat and disappointing performance.

“The goals they scored came from defensive mistakes including a penalty and a one-on-one situation that we didn’t deal with after giving possession away cheaply.

“We had all the pressure,” said the Berko boss. “We hit the cross-bar amongst other chances, leaving me very disappointed that we didn’t get at least a draw out of the game.”

The tough games continue to come for Berkhamsted, with Hertford Town up next, and Vipond has revealed he may experiment and give younger players invaluable experience on the pitch.

“Saturday will be a proper battle as it always is, they’ve got one or two suspended I think but it will be a lively game,” he said.

“Jay Caines, Alex Foster and Alfie Osborne have come in from the reserves who are top of their league and are doing really well.”

“It gives us an opportunity now to have a look at them a bit more, with an eye on next season.

“It’s no good having these young players if you are fearful of playing them. Now the pressure is off a little, we can give these players game-time in the first team.”

At the time the Gazette went to press, Berko were preparing for midweek action against Dacorum rivals Leverstock Green in the Herts Senior Cup quarter-finals, at Pancake Lane.
