Leverstock Green hammered at home by rampant London Colney

Leverstock Green suffered their worst defeat of the season on Tuesday night, going down 7-2 at home to London Colney.

It was Leverstock who scored the first goal, although it was somewhat against the run of play in the 15th minute. A cross from the right dropped for Jack Copson on the edge of the six-yard box and he steered the ball into the corner of the net.

Liam Jahn kept Leverstock in front with a good save to keep out a shot from Jack Woods on 21 minutes, however on 29 minutes the Green defence couldn’t clear a cross from their own six-yard box and Woods blasted home to level the scores.

Three minutes later Woods put over a low cross which somehow found its way through four Green defenders to reach Spencer Clarke-Mardle unmarked at the far post to shoot the visitors into a 2-1 lead.

Jahn pulled off another good save on 43 minutes to turn a shot from Woods round the post, however in the last minute of the half a cross found Jon Clements in the box with only Ross Adams for company, and Clements spun away from the Green defender before shooting his side into a 3-1 half-time lead.

London Colney continued to dominate in the second half, and scored their fourth goal in the 49th minute as Charlie Smith shot home from the edge of the box.

The fifth Colney goal on 61 minutes was somewhat unfortunate for Jahn as he pushed away a long-range shot from Charlie Smith only for the ball to come back off the post to present Clements with a tap-in.

There was a brief glimmer of hope for Leverstock on 64 minutes as Curtis Donaldson floated a free-kick into the box and Copson headed home his second of the game to reduce the arrears to 5-2.

However, five minutes later Alex McCarthy’s season ended with an ankle injury, and the visitors added two further goals.

Woods shot home from the edge of the box on 77 minutes, and Lee Close made a solo run into the box before shooting home his side’s seventh goal in the third minute of stoppage time.

Results elsewhere meant that Leverstock didn’t lose any ground on the teams below them, and three more points from their three remaining games will definitely ensure safety. The next visitors to Pancake Lane are Sun Sports on Saturday.
