Athletic started the better as a shot by Lee Stobbs just cleared the the bar, before the pressure told as Joe Naylor took advantage of a defensive error, picking up the ball then rounding the keeper before slotting into the open goal.

Sun Sports then had a good opportunity to equalise following a defensive mix-up, but keeper Matt Evans was alert to the danger by quickly dashing off his line to smother a shot from Sam Warrell.

Another chance fell to Naylor in the 17th minute when he was played through by Luke Dunstan, but with just the keeper to beat he shot agonisingly wide.

Further opportunities were being created by Athletic without testing visiting keeper Ross Hampton as the first half came to an end.

The beginning of the second half saw Sun take the game to Athletic, with the hosts looking to rely on quick breaks.

They replaced Ryan McMahon with Ryan Sturges, but it was Sun who struck next to equalise in the 72nd minute. From a throw-in the ball was played into Tring’s penalty area, and Karl Penny managed to get the finishing touch at the back post.

Athletic came straight back, with Dunstan shooting just wide and then Naylor also failing to hit the target after he was cleverly played in by Kieran Turner.

With 90 minutes up, Sun were lucky to survive a defensive error as Naylor anticipated a back pass and rounded the keeper but from an acute angle could not steer the ball into the goal.

Athletic were on the ascendency, and a flowing move down the right saw Turner’s effort deflected for a corner as the game finished all square.
