High-flying Berkhamsted cruise to a comfortable victory over Harefield

The largest crowd in the SSML Premier Division was well entertained on Saturday when second placed Berkhamsted saw off third placed Harefield United 3-1 at Broadwater.

The Comrades took the game to their visitors and Ryan Laville opened the scoring with a penalty by sending Matt Elston-Bull the wrong way from the spot after Jordon Frederick was brought down.

At the other end ex-Leverstock Green player Liam Hind shot wide for the visitors, while Josh Chamberlain volleyed over for Berko after a flowing move down the right by Adiel Mannion.

Courtney Massey’s cross was headed across goal by BJ Christie, before Ed Canham shot Berko into a two-goal lead as Frederick’s shot was blocked and the ball ran loose to tee up the defender.

United tried hard to hit back, with Comrades keeper Carl Tasker pulling off a fine save to deny ex-Broadwater favourite Michael Chennells, before Massey cleared off the line from the same player with the visitors suspecting handball.

The bar also came to Berko’s rescue before Chennells came off with a pulled hamstring.

Berko cruised through the second half, with the visiting keeper called into action to deny long range shots from Josh Chamberlain, Mannion and Jim Baldry, as well as a header by Canham.

Frederick scored Berko’s third goal when he spotted the keeper off his line and curled a shot into the top corner with 15 minutes left.

United sub Ben Porter smacked in a consolation goal for United with a fierce shot when the ball broke to him in the penalty area, but it was too little, too late.
