The red card was met by angry protestations from the Tudors players and fans, and Brennan was equally unimpressed by the game-changing sending off.

“It wasn’t just the decision,” said Brennan. “He was very hasty to get the card out.

“The lad’s going away from goal – it was a good run from him in behind our defence – I just don’t understand why he has to get his red card out and not even consult one of his assistants to see where he is.

“To be fair, our goalkeeper hasn’t taken him down with his hands, he’s taken him down by slipping with his knee or his leg.

“Our goalie coach Dmitri Kharine was behind the goal watching Laurie and he said it was never, ever a red card.”

Despite the result, Brennan said he was proud of the effort shown by his side.

“You need the luck in the cup and the breaks in the cup, and we didn’t have it today,” he said.

“To be fair to the boys, they gave everything, but we just lacked that bit of quality in different areas.

“We’ve got to improve in our distribution at times from the back but I can’t knock the lads for their effort.

“We were the better side but it comes down to what happens in both boxes. The higher you go, you play against better players and they punish you.”

Brennan added: “I’m a little bit disappointed with the goals we conceded because we worked on the fact that Bowman is clever and he likes to run in behind, and we worked on their corners.”
