Four-midable Tring Athletic down the Jets as Blunden hits a brace

Tring Athletic came out on top against Oxhey Jets as they romped to a 4-0 victory on a wet and windy day at The Grass Roots Stadium.

Tring earned the win with goals from Taylor Collins, Chris Blunden (2) and Ryan Sturges as they made light work of the difficult playing conditions.

Athletic took the game to Oxhey from the off, and it was no surprise when they opened the scoring as defender Dave O’Connor played the ball over the defence for Collins to run on to and shoot under Jets keeper David Jacks.

Athletic’s Lee Stobbs was seeing a lot of the ball down the right side, creating a number of opportunities, and in the 26th minute Sam Joliffe played a ball through to Stobbs whose cross was converted by Blunden.

The Jets had not caused the Tring defence too many problems until the 30th minute when Aaron Chenneour shot over the bar from just outside the area, and then crossed for Scott Pugsley to head just wide of Jack Hopwood’s goal.

Oxhey brought on three substitutes at the start of the second half, with Greg Osher, Stephen King and Raymond Koomson coming on for Ellis Brown, Tyler Connor and Jordan Gutteridge.

Following some neat football, Jets’ Raymond Koomson had a clear chance but his shot went straight to Hopwood, and the visitors were made to pay in the 69th minute as Joliffe went through on goal, only to be brought down for an obvious penalty which Blunden duly despatched.

The last 10 minutes saw Oxhey create a couple of chances, but Hopwood saved twice in quick succession and then tipped over a header from a free-kick.

But it was Athletic who scored next to wrap up the win when Sturges coolly slotted past keeper David Jacks after being played through by Blunden.

Tring now have two games to play in midweek, firstly against ever-improving Hadley tomorrow night, followed by a St Marys Cup tie against Bushey Sports on Wednesday, both at home.
