Berko bounce back to leave Vipond ‘satisfied’

The Comrades got back to winning ways after a disappointing 2-0 defeat to St Margaretsbury in midweek, to retain second position in the SSML Premier Division.

Vipond said: “All I can say is that we played really well on Saturday against a team that was third in the table so that was really satisfying, but whether we have turned a corner or not, I’m not sure.”

The Berko boss was full of praise for his team as they kept up with pace-setters Sun Sports, as well as keeping themselves above the chasing pack in a very congested top six.

“The boys were calm and confident before the game on Saturday,” said Vipond.

“We wanted them to relax, and they played some good football against a side that lost away in the league for the first time this season.

“We played some really good football at a high tempo; we would’ve also had a clean-sheet, but a little mistake in the last few minutes cost us that.

“It was a very satisfying result but it is still very tight at the top of the table with six teams up there.”

At the time the Gazette went to press, the Comrades were preparing to face Sun Sports in the Herts Charity Cup quarter-finals at Broadwater.

With the top two sides in the league doing battle in the cup, Vipond revealed that he was planning to give the squad players some time on the pitch.

“We will make a few changes to give the squad game time,” he said. “They’re top of the table so no doubt will be full of confidence but whether or not the sides show their hands, I’m not so sure.

“I know their manager really well and whether or not he keeps some of his top aces up his sleeve, I don’t know – we will see.”
